The Valley™ Demo

The Valley

The Valley Demo was created in 2003 to showcase SpeedTree technology in an interactive, real-time environment.

And The Valley delivers. Windblown trees and grass that look real from ANY distance (even within the tree itself!), along with bump mapped bark textures, specular effects, and a variety of shadow effects. The Valley is an unprecedented celebration of SpeedTree’s aesthetic versatility, range and power.

Hardware Requirements

The Valley is intended for use only with newer videocards that support a number of newer OpenGL extensions and features. The SpeedTree SDK itself is not tied to any particular rendering API or features; the application is free to render the geometry using virtually any API. This particular demo is intended to show what SpeedTree is capable of in a high-end setting, hence the higher restrictions.

Generally speaking, Nvidia GeForce3 and ATI Radeon 8500 and higher will get the job done, but economy cards like the GeForce4 MX series do not support all of the needed features. The following list of features must be supported in order for the demo to successfully run:

  • Four simultaneous texture layers (along with GL_ARB_multitexture)

  • GL_ARB_vertex_program (vertex programs must be accelerated in hardware for acceptable performance)

  • GL_EXT_texture_env_combine

  • GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3

  • GL_ARB_texture_compression

  • GL_ARB_fragment_program or GL_NV_register_combiners (will run with reduced features if extensions are not present)
