What is SpeedTree?

The SpeedTree product line enables both real-time developers and off-line animators to incorporate beautiful, animated, and fully 3D foliage into their scenes. Our trees use a fraction of the polygons of typical 3D tree solutions, enabling the creation of vast, detailed forests.

What is SpeedTreeRT?

SpeedTreeRT is the best foliage solution on the market because it is more than just a mesh… a lot more.

  1. Procedural Modeling in SpeedTreeCAD:SpeedTreeCAD is the design force behind the SpeedTree product line. This powerful Windows application provides all of the tools necessary to create, modify, and preview SpeedTree tree models in a highly interactive, three dimensional CAD environment. Used in conjunction with other members of the SpeedTree family, SpeedTreeCAD allows users to control all facets of tree rendering, from wind effects to dynamic levels of detail. It is the only foliage middleware on the market that allows you, the developer, to modify your trees and plants, or start from scratch and build a custom tree unique to your game.

  2. Dynamic Wind Effects: Leaves sway based on a wind strength parameter set by the developer. The strength parameter can be changed at run-time to simulate gusty conditions or to make the tree react to the environment (i.e., missiles flying by, helicopters, etc.). Two additional wind modes combine leaf swaying with branch motion.

  3. Automatic and Seamless Levels of Detail: A user configurable number of discreet levels of detail is computed based on the modeled tree. Transitions between these levels of detail are smoothed at run-time, allowing scenes to be populated with numerous trees without sacrificing performance or wasting time manually modeling each level of detail. Transition smoothly from a billboard to 1,000 + polygons while remaining extremely efficient.

  4. Lighting ScreenshotVersatile Lighting Effects: Dynamic Lighting is accomplished by providing surface normal data for branches, leaves, and fronds. Static lighting effects are available by providing light source information (i.e., position, color, attenuation, etc.) at load time. SpeedTreeRT computes appropriate vertex colors based on light data and tree position. Both lighting modes include the ability to darken or “dim” leaves gradually as they approach the interior of the tree. This simulates self shadowing and imparts a better sense of depth to the tree.

  5. Support Team: Customer service is a priority at Interactive Data Visualization. Our support is largely handled directly by our engineering staff, bypassing the normal screening layer so often found in support systems. If you’re having a problem that can’t be fixed immediately, chances are that you’ll be put in direct contact with one of the engineers working on that product. Just ask any of our customers how good our support is.




Is it easy to integrate with my 3D rendering engine?

Because the SpeedTreeRT C++ library is a numerical engine, it doesn’t directly handle any of the rendering chores, but it does facilitate them. SpeedTreeRT computes tree geometry, handles wind animation (on either the CPU or GPU), manages level of detail transitions, and reports all rendering information (vertex positions, texture coordinates, etc) to the rendering engine via a straightforward C++ API. We have already integrated with Emergent’s Gamebryo, Epic’s Unreal Engine 2, Unreal Engine 3, and Criterion’s Renderware. On top of that, our customers have integrated SpeedTreeRT into more than twenty different rendering engines, from commercial engines to scenegraph APIs to in-house engines running on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and next generation consoles.

What is included in the SpeedTreeRT full license package?


  • SpeedTreeCAD. A versatile, user-configurable tree modeling package that differs from all others by focusing on efficient offline and real-time rendering, SpeedTreeCAD allows modelers to edit and preview wind physics, and it automatically computes seamless Level Of Detail models all the way down to a billboard, as well as creating composite maps that include 360° billboard images.

  • SpeedTreeMAX. A 3ds max plug-in, SpeedTreeMAX delivers unprecedented realism and outstanding animation and efficiency to architects, animators and others who require the highest standards in offline foliage.

  • SpeedTreeMAYA. A plug-in for Alias’ Maya software, which is similar in scope to the SpeedTreeMAX plug-in. Not available separately.

  • SpeedTreeRT. This C++ class reads tree models, handles all wind computations, manages all Level Of Detail transitions (including Level Of Detail cross fades without needing to sort!), and provides all rendering data to your engine in the format of vertex buffers.

  • Complete source code for SpeedTreeRT C++ numerical engine.

  • Three months free support.

  • Numerous example C++ applications for rendering SpeedTree geometry in DirectX, OpenGL, and NDL’s Gamebryo.

  • Full C++ source code for a one million tree forest application.
